Why Start A Business Blog?
Of all content marketing strategies, blogging perhaps takes the longest time to deliver. With the advent of social media marketing today, it looks somewhat outmoded.
BUT – remember, however much you love social media, you never own social media platforms, and your account could be closed down instantly. However, if you choose self-hosted WordPress.org, you are in control of your content.
While businesses can’t do without social media, blogging can’t be ignored either. Long terms serious buyers and business relationships can only be acquired via blogging.
Late last year, the Content Preferences Survey Report by Demand Generation revealed that as many as 47% percent of potential B2B customers preferred looking at content before starting the purchase process. They viewed at least 3-5 pieces of content before engaging with the sales person.
Global markets are changing fast. There is so much competition! Alternatives are easily available. B2B customers are largely influenced by content that is value driven and clearly defines their growth and profitability.
Do You Need An Expert Blogger?
Blogging is not what it used to be like a few years ago. Starting a business blog these days doesn’t need a business owner to be an expert. It is simple, easy and hardly takes any time.
WordPress for example, lets you do everything with very little trouble. Did you know that 25% of the top one million websites use WordPress today?
Service providers should ask themselves a simple question: Does my blog content make me look an expert blogger? If yes, then they’re close to successful blogging.
Note that I said look like an expert blogger. WordPress users can produce a very professional looking website with minimum effort. Personally I would always get the skeleton website setup professionally, otherwise you run the risk of reinventing the wheel every time you learn something new.
So, NO … you don't need to be an expert blogger to start off with. Your skills will come rapidly. If you don't learn as quickly as you'd like, produce your article and send it to a Virtual Assistant who will post it to WordPress for you. Make sure that whoever maintains your blog has excellent presentation skills. This is especially impotrant in the areas of spelling and grammar if your blog is not written in your native language.
Do You Need To Be Expert In Your Business?
YES you do need to be an expert in your business. Nothing looks worse than a scanty knowledge of your subject matter.
Keeping your blog up-to-date is as important as putting up quality content. If articles go out of date, consider removing them rather than leaving old, incorrect information online. Ideally correct them, or just cross-link to newer content.
Although there is no benchmark for a minimum number of posts, regular contributions are important. Set an achievable schedule and stick to it. A blog that hasn't been updated for months looks very unprofessional.
